Study: Minimum Wage Workers Can't Afford Rent In 91 Percent Of US

  • A study published on Thursday reveals the huge disparity between hourly wages and the cost of renting an apartment in various U.S. cities.
  • Researchers with Out of Reach compared average rental prices for apartments and the minimum wage in various cities -- and found that minimum wage workers cannot afford one-bedroom apartments in 91 percent of the country.
  • Topping the list is California, where a worker would have to make $39.01 per hour to be able to afford a two-bedroom apartment, which averages just more than $2,000 a month in the state, Out of Reach reports. Minimum wage in the state is currently $15 an hour.
